As a member of All-party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Fixed Odds Betting Terminals (FOBTs) I have written to recently appointed Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport to ask what action her department will be taking to address the issue of FOBTs and gambling related harm.
According to statistics provided by the House of Commons Library, there are an estimated 280,000 problem gamblers in Scotland and England.
The availability to stake huge sums of money, in such a short period of time, on these machines is worrying. Individuals can lose hundreds if not thousands of pounds in a sitting.
Government already has the power to introduce a statutory instrument without primary legislation. Therefore, it’s vital they take action to reduce the maximum stake individual can place on FOBTs.
Taking action on gambling related harm must be a priority for this Government and I will continue to raise the matter where appropriate.
